Chapter Story
Our chapter was born from genuine connection—colleagues sharing their journeys, recognizing shared challenges, and envisioning something stronger for Latino/a/x leaders across Northern California.
We honor the leadership of Aaron Zavala and Hazel Wetherford, whose work with the Local Government Hispanic Network helped spark the idea for a place where people could come together, feel seen, and support one another. In January 2025, Unidos NorCal formally took shape with an inaugural board selected by Zavala and Wetherford.
From there, the work began. Paso a paso, the board laid the groundwork for a community built on trust, representation, and shared purpose. We drafted our bylaws, created our brand, developed our logo, and launched our LinkedIn presence. We set a bold goal—100 members in our first year—and achieved it. With every meeting, message, and connection, the chapter grew in both purpose and spirit.
As we enter our second year, we are excited to host our first series of in‑person networking and training events: Unidos NorCal en la Profesión, Unidos NorCal en Comunidad, and Unidos NorCal en Tradición. The momentum is real. But most importantly, the heart of Unidos NorCal remains clear: to support Latino/a/x public servants who have too often navigated their careers without networks, mentorship, or visibility. We also recognize there is a gap and need to support those who serve Latino/a/x communities. We are here to support both.
Whether someone is beginning their public service journey or leading at the highest levels of local government, our chapter offers a place where people feel welcomed, valued, and supported—a place where community is lived, not just stated. A place grounded in the belief that we rise elevándonos juntos.
